DESCRIPTION:Presented by Eric Pritchard\, violin \nGet tickets for this concert » \nThe final concert of the Ciompi Quartet Presents 2022 Summer Chamber Music Series features violinist Eric Pritchard performing with Elizabeth Anderson (cello) and Brandt Fredriksen (piano). The program includes trios of Shostakovich\, Bill Robinson\, and Dvořák’s “Dumky.” \nEric Pritchard has been serving as First Violinist of the Ciompi Quartet since 1995. He was previously First Violinist of the Alexander and Oxford String Quartets. He studied at the New England Conservatory\, the Indiana University School of Music and the Juilliard School where he received a Master of Music. He was awarded First Prizes at the London International String Quartet Competition and at the Coleman and Fischoff national chamber music competitions. He was also the winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs Award in violin in 1981. \nCellist Elizabeth Anderson has performed in major concert venues of the world in China\, Japan\, Australia\, Italy\, Germany\, Finland\, Mexico and the US. As a founding member of the Naumburg Award winning Meliora Quartet\, she made numerous appearances on the world’s most prestigious chamber music series and recorded the Mendelssohn Octet for Telarc with the Cleveland Quartet. She has also performed and recorded extensively with the Cassatt String Quartet\, VC3 Cello Trio\, and as cellist in the New York City Opera Orchestra at Lincoln Center. \nPianist Brandt Fredriksen enjoys a dynamic and versatile career as a performer\, musical director and teacher. His debut recitals were held in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City\, Gasteig Cultural Center in Munich\, Germany\, and Vafopoulio Cultural Center in Thessaloniki\, Greece. Fredriksen has appeared in recitals as a soloist and a collaborative artist at many prestigious venues including Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center Jazz\, Merkin Hall\, Florence Gould Hall\, Gasteig Cultural Center\, Megaron Athens and Thessaloniki\, Greece and Beijing Concert Hall in China. In 1999\, he was selected by the U.S. and China Foundation to perform recitals and concertos throughout China\, a tour that included Beijing\, Shenzhen\, Shanghai\, and Shenyang.

Program: Sonatas by Bach\, Couperin and Veracini\, and Telemann “Paris” Quartet. \nGet tickets for this concert » \n  \nCritically acclaimed modern and baroque violinist Nurit Pacht was a top prize winner in the Irving Klein International Music Competition\, the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition\, and the Kingsville International Music Competition. In the Spring of 2022\, she joined the faculty of Mount Holyoke College as a visiting professor. \nEmi Ferguson stretches the boundaries of what is expected of modern-day musicians. Her unique approach to the flute can be heard in performances that alternate between the Silver Flute\, Historical Flutes\, and Auxiliary Flutes. As a historical Flutist\, she is Principal Flute of the Handel and Haydn Society\, and is a frequent guest artist with period ensembles including Tafelmusik. She is on the faculty of the Juilliard School. \nStephanie Vial performs regularly in early music ensembles throughout the US and has given solo and chamber music concerts\, lectures\, and master classes at numerous universities including The University of Virginia\, Duke University\, and The Curtis Institute of Music. Program: Brahms’ Piano Quartet Op. 60\, a new flute quartet by Duke faculty composer Scott Lindroth\, and works by David Kirkland Garner and Tatiana Nikolaeva. \nJonathan Bagg is Professor of the Practice at Duke University and violist of the Ciompi String Quartet. His career with the Ciompi includes hundreds of concerts at chamber music venues across the U.S. and around the world\, as well as many recordings. Currently co-Artistic Director of Electric Earth Concerts in New Hampshire\, Bagg teaches viola and chamber music at Duke and is Chair of the Music Department. \nLaura Gilbert has appeared around the world as chamber musician\, soloist\, recitalist and guest lecturer. In 2012 she co-founded Electric Earth Concerts. In addition to founding and performing with Auréole\, a flute\, viola and harp trio\, she has appeared with Musicians from Marlboro\, Alexander Schneider’s Brandenburg Ensemble\, the Borromeo\, Brentano\, Saint Lawrence\, and Ciompi String Quartets\, among others. She is on the faculties of Mannes College of Music and Saint Ann’s School. 
Praised by the New York Times for his “excellent” and “evocative” playing\, Nicholas DiEugenio has twice been a prize winner at the Fischoff Competition. He is director of the Luby Violin Symposium at UNC Chapel Hill\, where he is Assistant Professor of Violin. \nAs a member of the Horszowski Trio\, Raman Ramakrishnan has performed across North America\, Europe\, India\, Japan\, and in Hong Kong\, and recorded for Bridge Records and Avie Records. He is an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society and teaches at Bard Conservatory. \nMimi Solomon has performed throughout the United States\, China\, Japan and Europe\, and has appeared as soloist with orchestras including Shanghai Symphony\, Philharmonia Virtuosi\, and Yale Symphony Orchestra. She is currently on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

SUMMARY:Invention and Discovery
DESCRIPTION:The first concert of the Ciompi Presents 2022 Summer Chamber Music Series is presented by Caroline Stinson\, cellist\, performing with the Lydian String Quartet. The program\, titled Invention and Discovery\, includes Andrew Waggoner’s fifth quartet\, Invention and Sinfonia by John Harbison\, a quintet based on a theme by Shakespeare\, and the great Schubert Cello Quintet – three works that open vast\, immersive vistas of sound. Enhanced Musical Reality\, no goggles needed. \nProgram \nJohn Harbison: Invention on a Theme of Shakespeare for solo cello and string quartet \nAndrew Waggoner: Fifth Quartet (commissioned for the Lydian by the Fromm Foundation) \nSchubert: String Quintet in C Major D.956 \nFor this concert only: Free admission at the door or reserve online; a non-perishable food item for the Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church’s food pantry is requested\n \nCaroline Stinson is cellist with the Ciompi String Quartet\, the resident ensemble of Duke University\, where she is Associate Professor of the Practice at Duke. Ms. Stinson performs widely as a soloist\, recitalist and chamber musician\, appearing at Zankel Hall (Carnegie)\, The Gardner Museum (Boston) and The Smithsonian (DC); the Koelner Philharmonie\, Lucerne Festival and Cité de la Musique in Europe\, and the Centennial Centre in Canada. She is Principal Cello of Orchestra Lumos in Connecticut\, under the direction of Michael Stern\, and performs regularly in Canada and Europe in recital. Ms. Stinson has premiered dozens of works for solo cello\, concerti and chamber music\, and her many recordings include the solo CD Lines on Albany Records. \nFrom its beginning in 1980\, the Lydian String Quartet (Andrea Segar\, Judith Eissenberg and Katherine Winterstein\, violins; Mark Berger\, viola; Joshua Gordon\, cello) has been acclaimed by audiences and critics across the USA and abroad for embracing the full range of the string quartet repertory with curiosity\, virtuosity\, and dedication to the highest artistic ideals of music making. In its formative years\, the quartet studied repertoire with Robert Koff\, a founding member of the Juilliard String Quartet who had joined the Brandeis University faculty in 1958. Forging a personality of their own\, the Lydians were awarded top prizes in international string quartet competitions\, including Evian\, Portsmouth and Banff\, culminating in 1984 with the Naumburg Award for Chamber Music. In the years to follow\, the quartet continued to build a reputation for their depth of interpretation\, performing with “a precision and involvement marking them as among the world’s best quartets” (Chicago Sun-Times). Residing at Brandeis University in Waltham\, MA since the group’s founding\, the Lydians continue to offer compelling\, insightful\, and dramatic performances of the quartet literature.
