The quartet is then joined by countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, a Durham native who performs regularly at the Metropolitan Opera, and whose singing has been called “miraculous” by the Globe and Mail. Next, the Ciompi unveil a new quartet by Duke professor and award-winning composer Stephen Jaffe, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. DUKE CONCERT NO. 3 FEATURING NICHOLAS KITCHEN, VIOLA & YEESUN KIM, CELLO
Baldwin Auditorium, Durham NC

PROGRAM:

Bach: Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major, BWV 552 (“St. Anne”), arr. Nicholas Kitchen
Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 2 in A Major, op. 68
Brahms: String Sextet No. 2 in G Major, op. 36

Local favorites Nicholas Kitchen, viola, and Yeesun Kim, cello, both of the Borromeo String Quartet, join the Ciompi for an evening of sextets. The concert begins with the premiere of Kitchen’s transcription for string sextet of Bach’s magisterial Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major, BWV 552 (“St. Anne”), one of the composer’s greatest works for organ. Baroque contemplation turns to modern tumult with Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 2 in A Major, op. 68, a work written and premiered in the midst of World War II, expressing the composer’s deeply personal response to the turmoil around him. In the evening’s stirring finale, Kitchen and Kim return for Brahms’ Sextet in G Major, op. 36, a passionate composition concealing the composer’s infatuation with singer Agathe von Siebold.

The concert begins with Mozart’s homage to Bach, the Adagio and Fugue in C Minor, K. 546, and continues with Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No. 1 in D Major, op. 11, featuring a haunting Andante Cantabile that moved Tolstoy to tears. In the second half, the Ciompi join forces with the Amernet for the premiere of a new work for double string quartet by Carl Schimell, a 2008 Duke Ph.D. and professor at Illinois State University. The Ciompi and the Amernet round out the evening together with the brashly modern Octet for Strings, Op. 11, composed by a nineteen-year-old Shostakovich.

DUKE CONCERT NO. 1 FEATURING AWADAGIN PRATT, PIANO
Baldwin Auditorium, Durham NC

In the Ciompi Quartet’s venerable tradition of opening each season with a work by Haydn, this program begins with the vivacious String Quartet in B-flat Major, op. 50, no. 1, the first of the composer’s Prussian quartets. Beethoven’s String Quartet in F Minor, op. 95 (“Serioso”), follows, a compact composition with a sense of liberation that echoes the bravura Overture from Egmont. In the evening’s boldly expressive finale, Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F Minor, op. 34, the Ciompi are joined by Awadagin Pratt, a charismatic pianist who started his illustrious career with a Naumburg International Piano Competition win and an Avery Fisher Career Grant. “Pratt plays with a full-bodied intensity that can be at turns intimate and grandly heart-wrenching. He has a story to tell, and you can hear him agonizing over every twist. Pratt commands your unfailing attention” (Newsweek).

Duke Performances Bonus Concert
Nelson Music Room, Durham NC

With George Gopen

Our special bonus concert surveys two towering monuments of Western art. First, Duke’s own Ciompi Quartet performs Beethoven’s magisterial String Quartet Op. 132. After intermission, Chamber Arts Society Director George Gopen reads one of his academic specialties: T.S. Eliot’s “Four Quartets,” often considered to be the greatest poem in English since Shakespeare.

As his health faltered, Beethoven produced an emotionally complex fifteenth quartet anchored in a third movement of hymn-like gravity, which was a major inspiration for Eliot’s “Four Quartets.” Both works divulge wonders on first encounter but only deepen over time, especially in the expert hands of Ciompi and Gopen. Together, they erase the line between the language of music and the music of language.

PROGRAM:
BEETHOVEN: String Quartet No. 15 in A Minor, Op. 132
T.S. ELIOT: Four Quartets
