SUMMARY:Portfolio Project at the Nelson Music Room
DESCRIPTION:Ciompi has commissioned current Duke graduate composers to write short string quartet movements. This premiere performance provides a chance to meet the next generation of composers and experience music on the cutting edge. There is a reception to follow the concert for supporters to have the opportunity to meet these young composers and discuss their work. \nGraduate Student Composers Whose Work Is Featured\nMozhgan Chahian Boroojeni\nTyler Jordan\nMonthati Masebe\nSidney Boquiren: Premiere of A New Work (Duke Alumnus) \nThe Portfolio Project\nThe Ciompi Quartet Portfolio Project began in the summer of 2020 as a way for the Quartet to engage with composers in Duke Music’s graduate program during the COVID-19 pandemic\, when live performances were curtailed and composers and performers needed creative outlets for their music. The success of the initial project inspired the Ciompi Quartet to continue the Projec and it now enters its fifth year.\nLearn More About The Portfolio Project

SUMMARY:Vienna to L.A.
DESCRIPTION:In a concert celebrating composer Arnold Schoenberg’s 150th anniversary\, the Ciompi Quartet performs a program of works connected by time and place. Mozart’s Vienna produced quartets like his K. 589: formally perfect\, deeply learned\, but with an effortless grace. Erich Korngold and Arnold Schoenberg\, both raised in Vienna\, were polar-opposites by the mid-1930s when they arrived in Los Angeles: Schoenberg was an avant-garde modernist and a revered figure in the Academy (UCLA); Korngold was a composer of lush romantic scores that were sought after by Hollywood. Both wrote brilliant quartets that gave their Viennese origins a 20th century incarnation. \nThe Program\nW.A. Mozart: String Quartet #22 in B-flat major\, K. 589\nArnold Schoenberg: String Quartet #4\, Op. 37 (1936)\nErich Wolfgang Korngold: String Quartet #2\, Op. 26 (1933) \nPresented by Duke Arts. \nDuke Arts\nDuke Arts champions expansive\, inclusive\, and impactful arts programs that build meaningful connections between campus\, community\, and global audiences. \nPlease Reserve Tickets in Advance Here

SUMMARY:Valley Classical Concerts\, Northampton\, MA
DESCRIPTION:The Ciompi Quartet performs with pianist Ieva Jokūbavičiūte at Valley Classical Concerts in Northampton\, Massachusetts. \nThe Program\nMieczysław Weinberg: Piano Quintet (1944) \nI. Moderato con moto\nII. Allegretto\nIII. Presto\nIV. Largo\nV. Allegro agitato \nW.A. Mozart \nWilliam Grant Still\nI. The Sentimental One\nII. The Quiet One (based on Inca melody)\nIII. The Jovial One \nJohn Dowland \nValley Classical Concerts\nValley Classical Concerts was founded as Music in Deerfield in 1979. Now based in Northampton\, our mission is simple: to bring first-rate performances of classical chamber music to the Pioneer Valley\, music and artists that might otherwise only be heard in major metropolitan areas. Valley Classical Concerts (VCC) presents both mainstream classical music and works of 20th and 21st century composers\, performed by a mix of established musicians and exciting early-career ensembles. VCC broadens access to this great music through deeply discounted family and student pricing and other special admission opportunities. \nIeva Jokūbavičiūtė\nLithuanian pianist Ieva Jokūbavičiūtė’s powerfully and intricately crafted performances have earned her critical acclaim throughout North America and Europe. Her ability to communicate the essential substance of a work has led critics to describe her as possessing ‘razor-sharp intelligence and wit’ and ‘subtle\, complex\, almost impossibly detailed and riveting in every way’ (The Washington Post) and as ‘an artist of commanding technique\, refined temperament and persuasive insight’ (The New York Times). In 2006\, she was honored as a recipient of a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. \nLabor Records released Ieva’s debut recording in 2010 to critical international acclaim\, which resulted in recitals in New York\, Chicago\, Philadelphia\, Baltimore\, DC\, Vilnius\, and Toulouse.

SUMMARY:An American in Shanghai: Forgotten Stories
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Min Xiao-fen\, pipa and voice \nWhen cultures mix\, music is usually where they find common ground. 1930’s Shanghai put American jazz trumpeter Buck Clayton in contact with Chinese songwriter Li Jin-Hui\, resulting in music that blended American jazz with Chinese popular song. The Ciompi Quartet and pipa virtuoso Xiao-Fen Min have commissioned two new works for pipa and string quartet by composers Alan Chan and Andrew Waggoner that explore the sonic possibilities of these disparate musical worlds. Chan’s work re-imagines 30s era songs through a jazz lens\, while Waggoner creates a dramatic dialogue between the Min’s virtuoso Pipa and the string quartet. The program includes a quartet by Jewish refugee Wolfgang Fraenkel\, who escaped to Shanghai in 1939 and became an influential teacher and musical figure in the life of the city. \n\nAndrew Waggoner: Forgotten Stories for String Quartet and Pipa (2024) WORLD PREMIERE – Ciompi Commission\nAlan Chan: “Catch Me at the Canidrome” for String Quartet and Pipa (2024) WORLD PREMIERE – Ciompi Commission\nWolfgang Fraenkel: Music for String Quartet (1949)\n\nThis concert is FREE \nWatch The Live Stream Here

DESCRIPTION:Featuring Jennifer Johnson Cano\, mezzo soprano and Ieva Jokūbavičiūtė\, piano. \nNight Music—Bela Bartók’s term for music that depicts of the sounds and emotions of the night—is the central episode in the arch form of his Quartet #4. SUMMARY:Sol Variations
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Gabrielius Alekna\, piano  \nSofia Gubaidulina and Shelley Washington both organized their works around Sol (the pitch G)\, but they go in remarkably different directions. Gubaidulina probes the question “existence vs. essence” whereas Washington explores a place she calls “Home of the Heart\, Heart of the Home.” Revered Polish composer Graźyna Bacewicz\, a woman\, gave us one of the best piano quintets of the era: romantic\, dramatic\, forward-looking. SUMMARY:Ciompi Presents: Evocations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Caroline Stinson (cello). \nTickets available from the Duke University Box Office. \nThe final concert in the summer series features Caroline Stinson performing with the Lydian String Quartet\, Rachel Calin (bass) and Adriana Linares (viola). \nProgram: Boccherini Cello Quintet Night Music of the Streets of Madrid; John Harbison Presences for solo cello\, string quartet\, and bass\, commissioned to honor the young cellist\, David Anderson (1978-1998); Brahms Sextet for Strings in G Major OP 36\, the early joyful flowering of Brahms’ musical voice. \n\nCaroline Stinson is cellist with the Ciompi String Quartet at Duke where she is Associate Professor of the Practice and directs Chamber Music. Ms. Stinson performs widely as a soloist\, recitalist and chamber musician\, appearing at Zankel Hall (Carnegie)\, The Gardner Museum (Boston) and The Smithsonian (DC); the Koelner Philharmonie\, Lucerne Festival and Cité de la Musique in Europe\, and the Centennial Centre in Canada. She is Principal Cello of Orchestra Lumos in Connecticut\, under the direction of Michael Stern\, and is co-Artistic Director of Weekend of Chamber Music in the Catskill Mountain Region with her husband Andy Waggoner. Ms. Stinson has premiered dozens of works for solo cello\, concerti and chamber music\, and her many recordings include the solo CD Lines on Albany Records. \nLinks to guest artists: \nLydian String Quartet \nRachel Calin\, bass \nAdriana Linares\, viola \nFrom Caroline Stinson:  The Lydian have had a long relationship with John Harbison\, whose work “Presences” for solo cello\, string quartet and bass we will perform\, and eventually record. I’m looking forward to performing the work again; I first learned it back in 2016 and performed it with the Verona Quartet. \nFrom the composer: “Presences\, for solo cello\, string quartet\, and bass viol\, was commissioned by Charles Felsenthal to honor his friend\, the young cellist\, David Anderson (1978-1998). With the help of many materials furnished to me by the commissioner — news articles\, photographs\, concert programs\, poems\, and personal memories — I conceived of an informal\, un-stylized piece\, not a threnody or tombeau\, but something which might permit David Anderson’s cello-voice — which unfortunately I never heard or knew — to be known and heard again through the porous curtain which shields us from the other side.” \n— John Harbison
