SUMMARY:Sol Variations
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Gabrielius Alekna\, piano  \nSofia Gubaidulina and Shelley Washington both organized their works around Sol (the pitch G)\, but they go in remarkably different directions. Gubaidulina probes the question “existence vs. essence” whereas Washington explores a place she calls “Home of the Heart\, Heart of the Home.” Revered Polish composer Graźyna Bacewicz\, a woman\, gave us one of the best piano quintets of the era: romantic\, dramatic\, forward-looking. The evening\, and the season\, starts with a quartet by Haydn\, reviving a Ciompi tradition! \n\nFranz Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in C Major\, Op. 74 #1\nSofia Gubaidulina: String Quartet #2 (1987)\nShelley Washington: Middleground for String Quartet (2017)\nGraźyna Bacewicz: Piano Quintet #1 (1952) with Gabrielius Alekna\, piano\n\nTickets are FREE and can be reserved in advance

SUMMARY:Ciompi Presents: Evocations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Caroline Stinson (cello). \nTickets available from the Duke University Box Office. \nThe final concert in the summer series features Caroline Stinson performing with the Lydian String Quartet\, Rachel Calin (bass) and Adriana Linares (viola). \nProgram: Boccherini Cello Quintet Night Music of the Streets of Madrid; John Harbison Presences for solo cello\, string quartet\, and bass\, commissioned to honor the young cellist\, David Anderson (1978-1998); Brahms Sextet for Strings in G Major OP 36\, the early joyful flowering of Brahms’ musical voice. \n\nCaroline Stinson is cellist with the Ciompi String Quartet at Duke where she is Associate Professor of the Practice and directs Chamber Music. Ms. Stinson performs widely as a soloist\, recitalist and chamber musician\, appearing at Zankel Hall (Carnegie)\, The Gardner Museum (Boston) and The Smithsonian (DC); the Koelner Philharmonie\, Lucerne Festival and Cité de la Musique in Europe\, and the Centennial Centre in Canada. She is Principal Cello of Orchestra Lumos in Connecticut\, under the direction of Michael Stern\, and is co-Artistic Director of Weekend of Chamber Music in the Catskill Mountain Region with her husband Andy Waggoner. Ms. Stinson has premiered dozens of works for solo cello\, concerti and chamber music\, and her many recordings include the solo CD Lines on Albany Records. \nLinks to guest artists: \nLydian String Quartet \nRachel Calin\, bass \nAdriana Linares\, viola \nFrom Caroline Stinson:  The Lydian have had a long relationship with John Harbison\, whose work “Presences” for solo cello\, string quartet and bass we will perform\, and eventually record. I’m looking forward to performing the work again; I first learned it back in 2016 and performed it with the Verona Quartet. \nFrom the composer: “Presences\, for solo cello\, string quartet\, and bass viol\, was commissioned by Charles Felsenthal to honor his friend\, the young cellist\, David Anderson (1978-1998). With the help of many materials furnished to me by the commissioner — news articles\, photographs\, concert programs\, poems\, and personal memories — I conceived of an informal\, un-stylized piece\, not a threnody or tombeau\, but something which might permit David Anderson’s cello-voice — which unfortunately I never heard or knew — to be known and heard again through the porous curtain which shields us from the other side.” \n— John Harbison

SUMMARY:"A Forest Unfolding" – National Gallery of Art
DESCRIPTION:A Forest Unfolding is a collaborative work inspired by recent scientific research into the rich communication and subterranean connectivity between trees. Four writers—the environmentalists Bill McKibben and Joan Maloof\, along with the novelists Richard Powers and Kim Stanley Robinson—selected prose passages and poems on the relations among people and trees.  They presented these selections to four composers—Eric Moe\, Melinda Wagner\, Stephen Jaffe\, and David Kirkland Garner—who set these words into a linked sequence of recitatives and arias.  The resulting whole traces a narrative arc from human estrangement from nature to a glimpse of the endless cooperation that knits a forest together. \n– Richard Powers\, novelist and co-creator of A Forest Unfolding.

SUMMARY:Duke Performances Presents: A Forest Unfolding
\nJohn Luther Adams: Above Sunset Pass (2007)\nDvorak: Silent Woods; Arranged for string quartet by Andrew Waggoner\nA Forest Unfolding (2018): a collaborative work by multiple creators \nFree tickets can be reserved at www.dukeperformances.org

SUMMARY:Duke Performances Presents: Black Angels
DESCRIPTION:George Crumb said that Black Angels “was conceived as a kind of parable on our troubled contemporary world.” Premiered in 1970\, it is one of Crumb’s most influential works\, with its spooky use of electronics\, vocalisations\, gongs\, and tuned glasses into the string quartet genre. Schubert’s D minor Quartet “Death and the Maiden” whose famous theme George Crumb interpolated into Black Angels\, has an air of dark prophecy as well\, yet its exuberant moments can still transport the listener far above daily struggles. \nFree tickets can be reserved at www.dukeperformances.org

SUMMARY:Duke Performances Presents: Lost Songs
DESCRIPTION:Florence Price’s unique voice ranges easily through the stylistic territory of late-romantic and mid-20th century classical music\, while confidently incorporating ideas and idioms from Black American music. Her recently discovered Second String Quartet accomplishes this with virtuosic flair over the course of its four expansive movements. The concert begins with Anthony Kelley’s playful take on two American games: baseball and basketball. Anna Weesner’s clarinet quintet The Eight Lost Songs of Orlando Underground are the imagined work of a fascinating but fictional character dreamt up by the composer. \nFeaturing Romie de Guise-Langlois\, clarinet \nAnthony Kelley: Sidelines for String Quartet (2008)\nAnna Weesner: The Eight Lost Songs of Orlando Underground for Clarinet Quintet (2019)\nFlorence Price: String Quartet #2 in A Minor (1935) \nFree tickets can be reserved at www.dukeperformances.org
