SUMMARY:Songs\, Games\, and Messages: featuring Molly Morkoski\, Piano: EVENT CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:EVENT CANCELED \nPresented by Duke Performances \nTickets: $25\, $10 All Students \nGeneral Admission Seating \n\n\nPianist Molly Morkoski joins the Ciompi Quartet for a program that spans five centuries. An arrangement of John Dowland songs for piano quintet opens the program\, presenting a fresh take on vocal works by the beloved Elizabethan composer. Morkoski joins for another quintet\, Weinberg’s opus 18; Weinberg\, a Polish war refugee who established his career in Soviet Russia\, looks backward to exemplars of genre and form in this majestic work. These two quintets bookend Kurtág’s 12 Microludes (“tiny games”)\, a sort-of “micro-well-tempered clavier” according to the composer; and the world premiere of Duke professor of composition John Supko’s Continual Park #17. Supko describes Continual Park as “an ongoing series of pieces for instruments\, electronics\, field recordings\, and spoken text. Concerned with the intersection of sounds recorded from life and the sounds that instruments make\, these works also explore the ambiguous play that results when language encounters music.” Contiual Park #17 was commissioned by the Ciompi Quartet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nPROGRAM\nJohn Dowland: Suite of Songs (arranged for Piano Quintet by Andrew Waggoner) \nKurtág: 12 Microludes for String Quartet\, op. 13 (Hommage à Mihály András) \nJohn Supko: Continual Park (No. 17)\, World Premiere \nMieczyslaw Weinberg: Piano Quintet in F Minor\, op. 18

SUMMARY:Of the Cloth: Featuring The Lark Quartet & Laura Sewell\, Cello
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: $25\, $10 All Students \nGeneral Admission Seating\n\nIn its first of two concerts on Duke Performances’ season\, the Ciompi Quartet presents a collaboration with the celebrated Lark Quartet. Following cellist Caroline Stinson’s departure from the Lark to join the Ciompi in 2018\, the Lark Quartet announced that 2019 would be its final season; over 34 years\, the all-female Lark was particularly esteemed for commissioning over thirty works by some of the greatest American composers. \nThe concert opens with Danish composer Niels Gade’s Octet\, an exemplar of classical-romantic style inspired by Mendelssohn. The 2015 quartet “Of Light and Shadows” by Füsun Köksal\, a young Turkish composer\, follows\, a brief foray into her otherworldly soundscapes. The concert closes with the combined octet (including the Lark’s founding cellist Laura Sewell) performing Durham-based Andrew Waggoner’s “Ce morceau de tissue\,” commissioned by the Lark in 2016 — a work inspired by the writings of Moroccan feminist Fatema Mernissi. \nPROGRAM \nNiels Gade: Octet in F Major\, op. 17 \nFüsun Köksal: String Quartet\, “Of Light and Shadows” \nAndrew Waggoner: “Ce morceau de tissu” for Two String Quartets \n

SUMMARY:Duke Performances Concert No. 2
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Susan Fancher\, saxophone \nProgram \nArvo Pärt: Fratres\nElliott Carter: Two Fragments for String Quartet\nScott Lindroth: New Work for Saxophone and String Quartet—World Premiere\nDvořák: “American” Quartet in F Major\, Op. 96. \nBuy tickets from Duke Performances \nThe Ciompi Quartet opens this concert with Arvo Pärt’s landmark Fratres\, an engrossing 1977 piece that seesaws between hyperactive flurries and halcyon stretches. They continue with Elliott Carter’s Two Fragments for String Quartet\, two short sections that test divides between silence and volume\, stillness and motion. The world premiere of a new piece by Duke Vice Provost for the Arts\, Scott Lindroth\, follows; written for the Ciompi and acclaimed concert saxophonist Susan Fancher\, Lindroth’s single-movement work allows “the quartet to follow Fancher’s lyrical\, spirited\, fragile\, and sometimes withdrawn utterances with effortless grace.” The Quartet closes with Dvo¿ák’s String Quartet in C Major\, op. 61\, a delightful end to the Ciompi’s new beginning. After more than forty years with the Ciompi Quartet\, Duke University’s esteemed string quartet-in-residence\, cellist Fred Raimi retired in April 2018. Just days before Raimi’s final performance\, the Ciompi announced that the search to fill the seat of its longest-standing member was finally complete with the addition of cellist Caroline Stinson. After extended stints in two of New York’s most celebrated quartets\, the Lark and the Cassatt\, Stinson brings new energy to the Ciompi as it begins to stake out an identity without Raimi for the first time since 1974. The new quartet’s first season honors tradition while pursuing an ambitious set of commissions\, collaborations\, and new works. \n

DESCRIPTION:Free admission. \nProgram \nSaint-Saëns: String Quartet No. 2 in G Major\, op. 153\nMarie Jaëll: String Quartet in G Minor\nVincent D’Indy\, Guillaume Lekeu\, and Claude Debussy: Excerpts from string quartets \nWould Johann Sebastian Bach be known to us\, had Mendelssohn not discovered his scores and introduced audiences to his music? Would we know Mahler\, championed by Bruno Walter and Leonard Bernstein\, when so many deemed his music unworthy? In this program\, the Ciompi Quartet follows in this tradition of rediscovery through the works of two unknown composers of the 19th Century\, Marie Jaëll and Guillaume Lekeu. The quartet will present the North American premiere of the recently discovered String Quartet by Marie Jaëll\, concert pianist\, pedagogue\, composer\, and friend of Franz Liszt. Accompanying the Jaëll is the late String Quartet of the french master-composer Saint-Saens\, and a selection of light movements from quartets by Debussy\, D’Indy and Lekeu\, written within a ten-year span between 1882 and 1893.
