Program
Saint-Saëns: String Quartet No. 2 in G Major, op. 153
Marie Jaëll: String Quartet in G Minor
Vincent D’Indy, Guillaume Lekeu, and Claude Debussy: Excerpts from string quartets
Would Johann Sebastian Bach be known to us, had Mendelssohn not discovered his scores and introduced audiences to his music? Would we know Mahler, championed by Bruno Walter and Leonard Bernstein, when so many deemed his music unworthy? In this program, the Ciompi Quartet follows in this tradition of rediscovery through the works of two unknown composers of the 19th Century, Marie Jaëll and Guillaume Lekeu. The quartet will present the North American premiere of the recently discovered String Quartet by Marie Jaëll, concert pianist, pedagogue, composer, and friend of Franz Liszt. Accompanying the Jaëll is the late String Quartet of the french master-composer Saint-Saens, and a selection of light movements from quartets by Debussy, D’Indy and Lekeu, written within a ten-year span between 1882 and 1893.
