A live concert experience that explores the Black and Indigenous influences on Dvořák during his time in America. The program weaves original Native American melodies and moving African American Spirituals, along with Dvořák’s most beloved chamber music.

Few works capture the spirit of American music like Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Ciompi Quartet presents the suite in its original chamber scoring for 13 instruments, revealing the clarity and intimacy of Copland’s music. The program also includes Stephen Jaffe’s Inscriptions for flute, bassoon, and strings, alongside Osvaldo Golijov’s Last Round, a powerful string work inspired by the passion and pulse of Argentine tango.

Ciompi continues its two concert series of one-hour programs featuring major works for string quartet in informal settings. Student ensembles from the Duke Chamber Music Program are also featured on these programs.
